The Arizona State University Sundevils participate in 20 college sportsbetween the men’s and women’s varsity groups. Playing out of their threestadiums, the Sundevils have won many different championships and havedominated most of the other schools in their division since 1931. Over the years the university has dominated in several sports. As a matterof fact they own 20 NCAA championships. The university also has 5 NCAA championshipsin baseball, 3 in women’s tennis, 1 for men’s gymnastics, 1 more for men’strack and field, 2 in women’s outdoor track and field, 1 in women’s indoortrack and field, 1 for wrestling, 2 in men’s golf, 13 in women’s golf, 1 forwomen’s softball, and 7 for women’s swimming and diving for a total of 132national championships. The men’s basketball team has participated in 12 NCAAtournaments. ASU’s football team won were Rose Bowl champions in 1987.They wonthe Fiesta Bowl five times prior to 1983. While the Sundevils have been successful in many sports, their football teamremains the most popular program. The football program has played in a coupleof different conferences, but the results have been the same: domination oftheir opponents. The most notable would be the 62-9 run of head coach Fred Kushfrom 1970 to 1975, culminating in a Fiesta Bowl victory over rival Nebraska.The team went through a series of disappointing seasons until the 10-3 seasonof 2007. Sadly, there has been a dearth of high level bowl game victoriesrecently. With a top level recruiting class, 2010 could be a surprisingtransition year.
